Our lab members Tom Witte (undergrad) and Laura Collins (grad) build a atomic scale monogram of our university. The ND design was created with 47 carbon monoxide molecules arranged one-at-a-time on the surface of a copper crystal. The field of view of the image is just 12 nanometers! The ripples seen in the image are the electronic waves bouncing off the molecules.
