On June 22, 2017, “Imaging quasi periodic electronic states in a synthetic Penrose tiling” was published in Nature Communications. This paper is the result of work done in collaboration with Tom, Rochelle and David, where Laura created a synthetic quasicrystal based upon the rhombus Penrose tiling and imaged the electronic states.
Below, we show a conductance map of the assembled synthetic quasicrystal with the rhombus Penrose tiling overlaid. The bright spots in this conductance map correspond to a certain site type in the Penrose tiling quasicrystal indicating that the quasiperiodic order of the quasicrystal contributes to the electronic behavior.
